How do I know how many words my manuscript has?
To find out how long your manuscript is in words, open Microsoft Word (this works for online MS Word too!) and select your text (press Ctrl+A to select everything if applicable); then, go to Review -> Proofing -> Word Count (tick the box "Include textboxes, footnotes and endnotes" if applicable): the number next to "Words:" is your word count! Easy, isn't it?
There are other ways editors might determine the length of a text (or ask you to do so), including counting the number of pages and the number of characters (both of which you do as per the process above). A quite old-fashioned unit of measurement is the cartella editoriale, also known as "standard page"; mostly used in Italy and thankfully becoming extinct, it refers to the length of 1500 (cartella commerciale) or 1800 (cartella editoriale) characters including spaces, which roughly amounts to 250 or 300 words, respectively. An awkward unit to convert and measure (and base pricing on) that is comparable to the US and UK measurement systems in relation to the much more intuitive metric system.
